Treatment of grief and loss among older adults

Older adulthood is often characterized by an increased likelihood of grief and loss. The loss of emotionally significant individuals in older adulthood is a risk factor for depression and prolonged grief disorder. This training will review the prevalence of grief and loss reactions among older adults, as well as common comorbid conditions and risk/protective factors. Types of losses discussed will include spouses/partners, friends, family members, and pets. The training will also discuss differentiating between grief that is “typical” vs. clinically significant. There will be a focus on evidence-based treatments for prolonged grief disorder among older adults.
