Supporting transgender youth within school environments

The vast majority of youth spend most of their waking hours in a school environment. Trans and non-binary youth often face challenges related to sex segregated spaces such as bathrooms and locker rooms, along with more insidious experiences of discrimination, bullying, harassment and violence. This workshop will discuss mechanisms to help create safe and nurturing educational environments so that these vulnerable youth can flourish and be educated appropriately. Current laws and educational codes in CA will also be discussed as a means of supporting trans youth in schools.

Learning objective:

  • Identify 2 challenges that TNB youth face in sex-segregated spaces within school environments, and challenges to well-being and academic performance.
  • Describe 2 psychological effects of discrimination, bullying, harassment, and violence on TNB youth in school settings and strategies to mitigate harm.
  • Name 1 law or educational code that supports transgender youth in schools
