Prenatal substance exposure and the criminal justice system
The behavioral and learning difficulties associated with prenatal substance exposure (PSE) persist over the life span, placing the juvenile and adult, especially those with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), at risk for criminal conduct.
This session will present a framework for understanding the brain-based developmental and behavioral difficulties of juveniles and adults affected by prenatal substance exposure, especially alcohol, and how these difficulties affect decision making and understanding consequences of behavior. Best strategies for communication with individuals with PSE will be addressed.
