Neuroqueer complexities: Exploration of common challenges experienced by neuroqueer people and their supporters/care providers

This training provides an introduction to the neuroqueer experience, and will include the educational goals of unpacking ableism in society, the psychology profession, ourselves, and the embodied experience of those who live at the intersection of gender and sexual minorities and neuro minorities such as autism. We will use this anti-ableist, liberatory frame to look at the complex challenges that neuroqueer youth and adults encounter in themselves, their families, schools, work, and relationships and to consider strategies to better meet and serve the needs of neuroqueer people.

Learning objectives:

Participants will be able to increase their awareness of the double empathy bind and identify 3 ways their cross-neurotype communication skills can be improved
Be able to identify three ways autism is missed or misdiagnosed by professionals
Examine minority stress in an intersectional lens and identify 3 ways this can negatively impact health outcomes
Identify three strategies participant can employ to reduce ableism in self, in their community and in their professional work with neurodivergent LGBTQ+ people.
