Managing crisis for youth and young adults

In this workshop, participants will learn how to use the values and attitudes of motivational interviewing and evidence - based common therapeutic micro-skills to create the psychological safety needed to engage community members in discussions addressing emotional distress and crisis situations among adolescents and young adults. Participants will also learn how to use evidence-based strategies for assessing lethality and how to initiate collaborative conversations with young people to engage as-risk individuals in safety planning and linkage to care. Building community resources and creating support networks for youth, their caregivers, and staff will also be addressed. In addition to learning the theory, attitude, and skills for how to apply evidence crisis-assessment and engagement strategies in high-risk situations, participants will practice using the skills to address various crisis issues currently encountered when working with youth in behavioral health settings: suicidal ideation and self-harm, substance use, and compulsive screen use, gun violence, and climate anxiety.
