Group work with LGBTQ+ clients

This workshop will address considerations for conducting affirmative, inclusive groups with LGBTQ+ clients. We will review foundations of affirmative practice in individual work and explore how these guidelines apply to group contexts. We will discuss specific considerations for different kinds of groups, including support, didactic, and interpersonal process groups, as well as how experiences may shift depending on group composition (e.g., all LGBTQ+ clients versus clients with a range of sexual & gender identities). Participants will practice applying skills by responding to several vignettes focused on a range of situations that may arise in group, and are encouraged to bring their questions and experiences around conducting groups with LGBTQ+ clients.

Learning objectives:

  • Describe 3 qualities of affirmative group practice with LGBTQ+ clients.
  • Identify at least 1 LGBTQ+ client consideration specific to didactic, support, and interpersonal process groups.
  • Identify at least 2 opportunities and challenges in LGBTQ+-focused groups and non-LGBTQ+-focused groups.
  • Practice responding to at least 1 situation that may arise for LGBTQ+ clients in groups.
