Depression and suicidality among older adults

More behavioral health providers are seeing older adult clients in their practice due in part to the greater percentage of older adults in the U.S. This training reviews the prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of depression and suicidality among older adults. The training will focus on how depression and suicidality present differently among older adults, as well as evidence-based treatment options appropriate for older adults.

Learning objectives:

  • Describe three ways in which the prevalence of depression and suicidality among older adults differs by setting (assisted living, community-dwelling, etc.) and other individual characteristics.
  • Describe two ways in which depression among older adults presents differently than depression among other age groups.
  • Describe one valid assessment each for depression and suicidality among older adults.
  • Describe two evidence-based treatments that are appropriate for older adults with depression and/or suicidality.
