Cultural humility: Native American survivance, resilience, and healing

In order to develop and work via cultural humility with Indigenous, Native American/American Indian, individuals, families and communities, it is essential to understand the historical and cultural context of the community. This includes historical events and impact from systems, statistics of health outcomes, strengths, and cultural practices that can promote intergenerational trauma survivance and resilience. The Indigenous community’s experiences with the services being considered such as behavioral health care will also be acknowledged. After addressing several of these key issues for increased understanding, there will also be references to and examples of best practices. This workshop will highlight the latest research for best practices for substance abuse treatment with American Indian/Alaskan Native populations and homelessness statistics to support implementation of Proposition 1.
