Creating and sustaining anti-oppressive community: Beginning the journey

This workshop will present basic frameworks of oppression and will critically examine our individual socialization as players in a larger system meant to disconnect and isolate us. Participants will learn fundamentals of social justice and begin to explore how we have collectively and individually been taught to be agents/oppressors and targets/the oppressed in a larger system of oppression. Attendees will also consider actions that we can take on personal, cultural, and institutional levels to create more equitable organizations, institutions, and communities.

Learning objectives:

  • Define 5 of the key oppression-related terms: stereotype, prejudice, discrimination, privilege/social power, and oppression
  • Identify 1-2 core reasons for the establishment and endurance of institutionalized oppression, particularly within a settler colonial context
  • Share and apply 2-3 methods for interrupting cycles of oppression, emphasizing the importance of right relationship and community.
