BHSD lunch and learn series #5: A discussion about the intersection between eating disorders and alcohol and other drug addictions

Substance use disorders may intersect with eating disorders (ED)/disordered eating. The patient may have one, may have the other, may have traits of both and various iterations of these mental health diagnoses.

This discussion will note similarities and differences between the two and how to conceptualize treatment in an outpatient setting.
We will focus on treatment of adults and older adults.

Learning objective: 

  • Identify one key difference in how an Anorexic “only” patient presents versus how an opioid using patient may present that is underweight.
  • List at least 3 similarities in treatment planning with Binge Eating disorders and AOD use disorders.
  • Compare and understand the role of anxiety in both eating disorders and AOD use.
